A Beacon of Hope: The Unseen Warriors of NIMH
Inspired by Robert C. O'Brien's novel: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
Mrs. Frisby, a resilient mouse widow with four children, was having herself another busy day. The maze of life dropped her into new challenges and every ticking moment, she had to find a way out.
One fine day, Mrs. Frisby found herself in a dire condition. Her youngest, Timothy, had fallen ill and needed medicine from Mr. Ages, an old but wise mouse living on the other side of the farm.
Along the way, Mrs. Frisby met Jeremy, a young, scatterbrained crow who’d gotten tangled in a six-pack plastic ring. Just as Mrs. Frisby had saved him, a cat pounced, forcing them to take refuge in a hollow log. In there, the crow explained how it owed its life to a group of super-intelligent rats, the Rats of NIMH.
Now, Jeremy was no simple crow, he knew the whereabouts of the Rats of NIMH. Realizing she could ask them for help, Mrs. Frisby took the crow up on his offer for a ride. He dropped her by the rose bush, the unlikely home of the mysterious rats.
Within the rose bush, Mrs. Frisby was introduced to Nicodemus, the leader of the rats. With his age came wisdom and knowledge beyond any creature Mrs. Frisby had ever known. She told him about Timothy's illness and their looming problem - Moving Day. The day when the farmer would plow the field where their home was.
Moved by her plight, Nicodemus decided to help. He shared their origin and how they were subjected to experiments at a place called NIMH, granting them exceptional abilities. He detailed their plan to leave the rose bush and start a society on their own, one where they did not depend on humans.
Nicodemus and his rats decided to put their escape on hold and focused on helping Mrs. Frisby. With the use of their intelligence and strength, they were able to move her home to a safe location, ensuring Timothy had enough time to recover.
As gratitude, Mrs. Frisby shared about the NIMH's plan to exterminate the rats which she overheard from the farmer. With a heavy heart, the rats expedited their plan, leaving the rose bush behind for a new life, unknown but free.
A new dawn marked new beginnings for all. The field was plowed but Mrs. Frisby’s home was safe. The Rats of NIMH had disappeared, leaving no trace behind. However, in the heart of a brave mouse, their memories remained, stories to be passed down to her children and theirs. Their heroic deeds spoke of selflessness and the indomitable spirit of unity, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience for those who braved life’s unexpected order.
