A Blink in San Luis Rey

Inspired by Thornton Wilder's novel: The Bridge of San Luis Rey

Once upon a time, in the vast landscapes of Peru, not far from the city of Lima, a frail bridge known as San Luis Rey collapsed. The bridge had been a life link for the humble dwellers, a crossing of paths, dreams, and destinies. The catastrophe took five lives, leaving a void and a story to tell.

At the town nearby, lived an elderly monk, Brother Juniper, who witnessed the unfortunate event. He was intrigued by the randomness of the incident and decided to investigate the lives of the victims.

Among the victims was an old lady, Doña Maria, who was always buried in the depths of loneliness, longing for her estranged daughter, Clara, living in Spain. She was on her way to visit Clara, with a hope of restoring their relationship, but fate had other plans. The next was Pepita, a young orphan girl, raised by the convent and chosen to accompany Doña Maria as her companion.

Juan, a gifted theatre artist, always fancied Doña Maria's beautiful daughter, Clara. Coincidently, Juan was on the same bridge, hoping to propose Clara on her mother's visit.

The twin brothers, Manuel and Esteban, worked as scribes and shared an inseparable bond until Manuel fell in love. This love grew unhealthy, causing resentment between the brothers, leading them to the fatal journey over the bridge.

For two years, Brother Juniper devoted his life to unravel the mystery behind the collapse—was it a sheer accident or preordained. He compiled a voluminous book, detailing every aspect of the victims' lives, trying to find patterns. However, his work was deemed heretical by the Church, leading to his execution and the book's burning, leaving the mystery unsolved.

In the grand scheme of life, the incident seemed insignificant. Yet, for those five souls and those they left behind, each life was a universe in itself. The lives they lived, the choices they made, the dreams they nurtured, and the end they met crafted the saga of San Luis Rey, etched in the annals of time, reminding us of the delicate threads that bind us all.
