A Line's Redemption
Inspired by Edwin A. Abbott's novel: Flatland
In the realm of Flatland, a world confined to two dimensions, lived a simple line named Linus. He occupied the lowest tier of Flatland's social hierarchy, a mere servant to the geometrical nobility. Linus lived out his days in insignificance until a fateful encounter with a Sphere from Spaceland shook his existence.
One day, while serving at a banquet for nobles, Linus noticed a peculiar entity. This entity, unlike the polygons he was accustomed to, had a radiance that seemed to come from another dimension. That was Sphere, an ambassador from the three-dimensional Spaceland.
Intrigue got the better of Linus, and he ventured to communicate with Sphere, ignoring the gasps of polygons around him. Sphere, surprised by the audacity of a humble line, decided to humor Linus. It was the beginning of a unique friendship, where Linus began to learn about the existence of a third dimension that gave Sphere its enchanting form.
Sphere took Linus on a journey through Spaceland, where Linus discovered the marvels of the third dimension. For the first time, he saw his own world from a height, and to his astonishment, he could view the entire Flatland in a single glance.
His return to Flatland was devastating. The newfound knowledge made his flat world seem desolate devoid of depth. He longed for the third dimension but soon realized the higher classes were not ready for such radical truths. His attempts to enlighten them were met with mockery and rejection as the polygons could not comprehend the notion of a world beyond their flat understanding.
Undeterred, Linus persisted in disseminating his knowledge, only to find himself imprisoned for propagating 'madness'. In prison, he was comforted by dreams of Spaceland until one day, his cell was illuminated by a familiar radiance. Sphere had come for his rescue.
Though feared and scorned by his peers, Linus stood firm in his conviction. The line had touched the essence of the third dimension, and for that, he was blessed with a depth that no polygon in Flatland could ever comprehend. Linus learned to be content in his knowledge, the simple line who knew of worlds beyond the ones the polygons could never dream of.
