A Sea of Deception
Inspired by Ernest Hemingway's novel: To Have and Have Not
Every day as the sun sank beneath the vibrant tropical trees, Harry Morgan watched in a state of reflective tranquility. These moments offered his only solace amidst the chaos of life in Key West, smuggling goods and dodging law enforcement. His life embodied the contradicting tranquility and tempestuousness of the sea.
Before he became a rum-runner, his love for the sea was simple, wholesome. The rhythmic lapping of waves against the hull of his boat would often lull him into an introspective state. His relationship with the sea, however, was now one fraught with danger and unpredictability. Like a lover who knew too many secrets, the sea was a double-edged sword.
One day, he received his most dangerous assignment yet. A wealthy tycoon named Johnson requested a secret shipment of gold. Johnson was notorious for his ruthless methods, but the pay was tempting enough for Harry to risk it.
The night was a pitch-black cloak as Harry started his journey. But halfway through the voyage, he noticed a flicker of light approaching his boat. The Coast Guard patrol. Panic surged through his veins, his heart was a ticking bomb. However, Harry was a man seasoned by the sea’s fickle nature. He turned off his boat’s lights and steered the craft into a nearby cove, holding his breath like a hunted animal.
As the patrol boat's lights swept over his hidden spot and moved on, Harry let out a sigh of relief. But elation turned into dread as he noticed Johnson's gold was missing. Searching frantically, he found it obscured under a tarp, gleaming mockingly in the moonlight.
Back in Key West, he met Johnson at their rendezvous spot. As he handed over the gold, Johnson smirked, 'You thought you'd pull off a fast one, Morgan?'
With a sinking feeling, Harry followed Johnson's gaze to his right. His heart pounded as he saw the Coast Guard officials hovering subtly at a distance. Johnson had set him up.
As they moved to arrest him, Harry took a chance. Drawing on his years of sailing expertise, he took a plunge into the sea. Gunshots echoed behind him as he swam into the inky abyss, towards his faithful boat.
He navigated it through the labyrinthine mangroves, staying just out of reach of the chasing Coast Guard. The sea was his accomplice tonight, shielding him in its vastness.
Harry lived to see another day, but life in Key West was essentially over for him. The drama of the night left a bitter taste in his mouth. Yet, he felt an unyielding gratitude towards the sea - his betrayer, his savior. Contemplating the complexity of his life at sea, he prepared for a new chapter sailing uncharted waters.
