An Answered Prayer: Margaret's New Chapter
Inspired by Judy Blume's novel: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret
Margaret Simon, now aged thirteen, was on the cusp of adolescence. Her world had extended from pre-teen woes and everyday problems to a realm of new experiences, hopes, and apprehensions. She continued her heartfelt conversations with God, a sanctuary where she expressed her feelings and sought answers.
One evening, after an exchange with her mother about high school, Margaret retreated to her room, feeling a mix of expectation and trepidation. She closed her eyes and, as usual, connected with God. 'Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret. High school is right around the corner. I'm excited but anxious. There will be new people, new teachers...it's like starting life all over again. I just hope I'll fit in and find my place,' she conveyed through her thoughts.
Days turned into weeks, and soon the summer ended. On the first day of school, Margaret felt a knot in her stomach as she stood in front of Greensboro High, her new school. Students of all ages buzzed around, laughter and chatter filling the air. 'Are you there, God?' she silently asked, 'I could use a little help.'
As if a response to her silent prayer, a girl approached her. 'Hey, you look new. I'm Laura,' she said, using her friendly smile to ease Margaret's anxiety. From that moment, Margaret and Laura became fast friends. They shared classes, sat together at lunch, and helped each other navigate the complex world of high school.
God became her refuge when she faced her first failure in mathematics, when she felt the sting of her first heartbreak, and when she navigated disagreements with Laura. She would always start with, 'Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret.' Margaret learned that the answers came in different forms - sometimes as comfort, sometimes as solutions, and sometimes as realizations about her own strength and resilience.
One such evening, as Margaret was reflecting on her high school journey, she felt a sense of contentment. 'Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret,' she mentally confided, 'High school isn't as scary as I thought. Yes, there were hurdles, but each one taught me something. And Laura...she's the best thing that's happened to me here. Thank you for guiding me through.'
Margaret realized that adolescence, much like life, was filled with ups and downs. She understood that her faith was her guiding light, silently answering her prayers and supporting her through each step of this journey. Margaret looked forward to more chats with God, more lessons, and more experiences. The spirit of her young adolescence still lived on, and she knew she would continue to grow, learn, and evolve, with God as her confidante.
