Beyond The Prairie: A New Chapter For Sarah
Inspired by Patricia MacLachlan's novel: Sarah, Plain and Tall
On a bright, cool morning in the wide expanse of the prairie, Sarah took several deep breaths, absorbing the serenity that nature offered. Ever since she'd come to be with Jacob Witting and his children, Anna and Caleb, she'd found a new home, a new family, and a newfound love for the sprawling plains. Despite missing the sea, she had come to love this new life with a fervor she had not expected.
Jacob, her husband, was a man of few words but of profound love and understanding. His children, her children now, were sprightly and filled with curiosity. Anna, with her thoughtful and kind demeanor, shared Sarah's love for words, while Caleb, the younger one, echoed his father's quiet strength and sincerity. Together, they made an unusual but harmonious family.
One day, while teaching Anna and Caleb about the wonders of literacy, Sarah realized that the children, although comfortable with her, yearned to know more about her life before them. The adventures by the seaside, the roar of the ocean, and the creatures that inhabited it were stories yet untold.
Deciding to share a piece of her old life with her new family, Sarah began to write a book. She decided to call it 'Sea's Call,' detailing her adventures and experiences by the sea. Every evening, she'd tell them a chapter from her book. The children were enthralled, hanging on her every word, their eyes shining with wonder. Jacob, although more reserved, paid close attention too, often stealing glances at Sarah as she spun tales of the sea.
In time, 'Sea's Call' became not just a reminder of Sarah's past, but a vivid connection between her two worlds. Anna and Caleb started imagining the sea, its salty air, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore. They understood why she had missed it terribly but also found comfort in the fact that she now called their prairie home.
The book brought them even closer, as they shared laughter and gasps of surprise, shedding an occasional tear. It was a journey that brought them together as a family, a journey Sarah was glad to have embarked on.
As Sarah penned the last words of her book, she looked up and found her family waiting to hear the end. She read it aloud, and when she finished, they all sat in silence. After a while, Caleb whispered, 'Sarah, we’ll visit the sea one day. Together. As a family.' Sarah, touched by the declaration, hugged him tightly, tears of joy twinkling in her eyes.
With that promise, Sarah realized that she was not just Sarah, plain and tall, but Sarah, loved and cherished.
