Lessons Amidst the Timber
Inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder's novel: Little House In the Big Woods
In the untamed heart of the Wisconsin wilderness, a little log cabin stood firmly amidst the tall, whispering trees. This lonely outpost of human habitation was the home of the Ingalls family: Charles, Caroline, Mary, Laura, and the baby, Carrie. Their days were filled with the simple, grueling tasks of survival, but their lives were rich with love and laughter. On this particular day, Laura and Mary were excited.
They had witnessed their first snowfall of the year, and the woods surrounding their home were covered in a pristine white blanket. Although work needed to be done, Pa allowed the girls to play outdoors after completing their morning chores. Dressed in their warmest clothing, Laura and Mary laughed and played, making snow angels and throwing snowballs. Suddenly, a nearby rustle made Laura freeze. Out of the underbrush, a small, snowy white rabbit emerged, its nose twitching curiously.
The sight of the innocent creature brought a sense of calmness and awe to Laura's heart, reminding her of the beauty that resided within their tough existence. After a few minutes, the rabbit scampered away, leaving the girls in spellbound silence. Back in the warmth of their home, the girls shared the day's events with Ma and Pa around the roaring fireplace.
As Pa relished his pipe, he shared tales of his own childhood. Telling the girls about his adventures in the forest, he filled their wide eyes and eager ears with stories of courage, endurance, and respect for the wilderness. The girls listened attentively, each story evoking a sense of excitement and wonder within them. As the night grew deeper, Ma gently urged them towards their cozy loft. Lying there, looking out of their small window at the snow-covered woods, Laura felt a deep sense of love for her family and the little house they lived in.
She realized that while the wilderness might be daunting, the lessons she was learning were invaluable. These early experiences in the big woods were shaping her into a strong, resilient woman, ready to face whatever life threw at her. As she drifted off to sleep, she looked forward to another day of chores, lessons, and adventures in the big woods.
