Melting Snows: An Echo of Starkfield

Inspired by Edith Wharton's novel: Ethan Frome

In the remote and snowy landscapes of Starkfield, Massachusetts, the desolate Frome farm stood brooding. Ethan Frome, the tragic protagonist of Wharton’s tale, had lived a life of emotional desolation and unfulfilled desires. But in this story, we explore a time when Ethan’s heart had not yet become as cold as the Starkfield winter.

There arrived a new phase in the otherwise uneventful life of Ethan, with the onset of another harsh winter. Life had been particularly harsh on him, leaving him with his ailing wife, Zeena, and a farm that barely kept them afloat. During these trying times, a ray of hope descended upon the Frome household in the form of Mattie Silver, Zeena's cousin.

Over time, he found himself drawn to the vibrant and youthful Mattie, who was as bright as a summer’s day, contrasting to Zeena’s icy demeanor. Mattie too found solace in Ethan's company. Their hearts craved the warmth they found in each other's company.

One day, while Zeena was away, the snow relentlessly fell, as if the sky mirrored Ethan's feelings. Mattie prepared supper, setting the table with the red pickle dish- a wedding gift Ethan and Zeena had kept untouched. The admiration in Mattie's eyes for this simple possession of theirs reflected the desire for a life she yearned with Ethan.

However, their world shattered when Zeena returned earlier than expected. The pickle dish lay broken, symbolizing the shattering of not just the illusion of their secret life, but their hearts too. Zeena’s discerning eyes spared nothing, grasping the otherwise unspoken truth.

A ride to the train station, a near-death experience on a sled, and the eventual binding of Ethan and Mattie in hardship rather than happiness concluded their tragic romance. Ethan’s dreams remained trapped like the snowy landscape of Starkfield, forever longing for an eternal spring which never came.

In the land of Starkfield, where the winters were long and the springs short-lived, Ethan Frome’s heart yearned for warmth. Perhaps love was not a luxury granted to all. Perhaps, it was as elusive as a warm spring day in the chilling winds of Starkfield.
