Tales under the Starry Sky: The Legacy of Kunta Kinte
Inspired by Alex Haley's novel: Roots
Once known as Kunta Kinte, Toby had survived the wretched journey across the Atlantic as a slave, many painful months enslaved on a plantation and the brutal loss of his native name. But, he never lost sight of his ancestral roots or the fond memories of his homeland.
It was a sweltering summer day when Toby, with decades of experience, served as the plantation carriage driver. As the family feasted inside, Toby would sit outside under a tree, fostering dreams of his true home, a world away.
One night, a young girl named Kizzy approached Toby. She was the daughter of an enslaved cook, full of spirit and curiosity. 'Tell me a story, Toby,' she said, her eyes wide with expectation. Toby looked at her, a familiar spark in his eyes. He had shared his tales of Africa with many, but Kizzy’s curiosity was different; it was profound.
'Once upon a time,' Toby began, his voice deep and magnetic, 'in a village named Juffure, I was born.' He narrated tales of his beautiful homeland, the custom of African names, his family, and his brave Mandinka warriors’ lineage. He spoke about his culture, traditions and the freedom they enjoyed, a stark contrast to their present reality.
His words painted a vivid picture, transporting the young girl to the heart of Africa, far away from the plantation fields. Kizzy was engrossed, her heart ached to see the magical land that Toby belonged to. Every night, under the vast starry sky, Toby would tell Kizzy tales from his past. Tales of pride, bravery, and freedom. Kizzy, in return, promised to remember and pass on these stories.
Years passed, and Kizzy grew up, the tales from Toby deeply etched in her heart. She shared them with her children, who passed them onto their descendants, keeping the legacy alive. The tales of a brave Mandinka warrior named Kunta Kinte, his homeland Juffure, the traditions, the pride, and the sweet taste of freedom remained an integral part of their lineage, a beacon of hope that constantly reminded them of their roots and a past they must never forget.
Thus, Toby, originally known as Kunta Kinte, ensured through his narratives that even in the most challenging times, the stories of their roots survived and thrived, providing a glimmer of hope and courage to many generations that followed.
