The Forbidden Return

Inspired by Lynne Reid Banks's novel: The Indian in the Cupboard

It was a crisp morning when Omri, now a young man, stumbled upon the old cupboard buried under a pile of forgotten objects in the basement. He had long ago shelved his childhood adventures with the fascinating cupboard that could bring plastic figures to life but seeing it again stirred a whirlwind of emotions.

He remembered Little Bear, the Iroquois Indian chief, and Boone, the rough cowboy. Omri reached deep into his pocket and pulled out a small plastic figure. A nostalgic smile played on his lips as he recognized it as the Indian chief that had been his companion so many years ago.

Reaching out he placed Little Bear back into the old cupboard, turning the magic key. It had been years since Omri had used the cupboard, years since he had said goodbye to his plastic-turned-real friends, and he was uncertain if the magic still retained its power.

After a minute, Omri slowly opened the cupboard to reveal Little Bear, as animated and alive as he had been in Omri's childhood memories. Meeting Little Bear again warmed Omri, but apprehension stirred in his stomach. He remembered the lessons he learned about the ethical implications of bringing these figures to life.

Little Bear spoke in the Iroquois language, expressing his confusion and fear. Omri's knowledge of the language had faded over the years, but he could understand enough to soothe Little Bear, explaining their history and his own growth.

Interestingly, Little Bear revealed that time flowed differently in the world he came from. To him, only a couple of days had passed since his last interaction with Omri. Omri shared his own life's experiences, making Little Bear understand the vastness of time that had elapsed in the real world.

Despite their joyful reunion, Omri knew he had to send Little Bear back. He reassured Little Bear that his place was in his own time, with his own people. Little Bear, though reluctant, agreed.

Placing Little Bear back in the cupboard, Omri turned the key. Before closing the cupboard, he took one last look at his old friend. Omri took a deep breath, thanked Little Bear silently for the unforgettable childhood adventures, and turned the key back.

Opening the cupboard, Omri saw his old plastic friend, lifeless yet full of uncountable memories. Omri realized he needed to put his past away and move forward, cherishing the memories of a unique childhood that no one else would believe. As he restored the cupboard back into the basement, he was filled with a sense of closure, a chapter had ended, and a new one had begun.
