The Forgotten Shadow of the Curiosity Shop
Inspired by Charles Dickens's novel: The Old Curiosity Shop
The Old Curiosity Shop, with its creaking floorboards and shelves full of oddities, was usually a place of delight for young Molly. Yet, on one cold winter evening, the atmosphere was different. It was not the usual feeling of excitement, but an air of mystery, coloured with a pinch of fear, that hung in the room.
Molly lived with her Aunt Nell, the shop's rightful owner. This evening, Nell sat Molly down and began telling a story never heard before.
'Years ago,' Nell began, 'your great-uncle kept a mysterious artifact in the shop, a gold-rimmed hand mirror that was said to have magical powers. The legend goes that if one gazed long enough into the mirror, one could catch a glimpse of their future.'
The room seemed to tighten around Molly as she whispered, 'What happened to the mirror, Aunt Nell?'
'It was stolen,' Nell answered, 'One stormy night, a masked man swept into the shop, snatched the mirror and vanished. Your great-uncle chased him but the thief disappeared into the dark. The mirror was never seen again.'
Molly felt a shiver run down her spine. 'What do you think he saw in it, Aunt Nell?'
Nell sighed, 'I guess we'll never know. The thief was never caught and your great-uncle never really got over the loss. The mirror took away a part of him.'
The following day, as the sunbeams danced in the dusty shop, Molly felt an uncontrollable pull towards one of the back shelves. There lay a dusty, old, gold-rimmed hand mirror, just as Aunt Nell had described. Inexplicably trembling, Molly picked up the mirror and peered into it. Not believing her eyes, she saw herself grown-up, running the shop with a warm smile, surrounded by a loving family.
She ran to Nell, mirror in hand, who stared back in disbelief. Molly knew the mirror was a symbol of hope, not fear - a glimpse into a future where every day was an adventure at The Old Curiosity Shop, with magic, love and family ensconced in its heart.
