The Gift of the Prairie
Inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder's novel: On the Banks of Plum Creek
On a splendid morning, bright and full of promise, the sun rose high over the banks of Plum Creek, casting long shadows over the landscape. Laura and Mary Ingalls, the two young residents of the Ingalls' homestead, were ready to venture into the day. They had become accustomed to the prairie life, their days filled with hard work and simple pleasures.
While their father, Charles Ingalls, toiled away in the fields, and their mother Caroline attended to the household chores, the girls explored the vast landscape around them. Wildflowers carpeted the prairie in an array of vivid colours, while a sweet scent hung in the air. Laura took a deep breath, closing her eyes to imprint this moment in her memory.
On this day, they had a special task. They were to gather willow sticks for their mother, who planned on weaving them into a basket. As they moved deeper into the forest, a sudden rustling noise caught their attention. It was a fawn, its soft brown eyes reflecting their shared curiosity.
Laura approached it slowly, extending her hand out to touch its soft fur. The fawn, unafraid, allowed her to touch it before bounding off into the brush, leaving the girls in awe. This encounter left Laura with a sense of connectedness to the wild. The rest of the day was spent in collection and play, their task forgotten amidst the excitement of their adventure.
Upon their return, Caroline looked at their empty hands and knew that something had distracted them from their task. She was no stranger to the magic the prairie held in its heart. With a gentle smile, she asked about their day. Laura, unable to contain her enthusiasm, told her mother about the fawn, her words tumbling out in the excitement.
Caroline listened with a warm smile, imagining the idyllic scene her daughters painted. She hugged them close, grateful for the lessons this prairie life was teaching them. That day, the young girls learned that sometimes, the beauty of nature and the sheer joy of being alive outweighs the day-to-day responsibilities. And that was the most precious lesson of all, the gift of the prairie.
