The Last Gable's Secret

Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel: The House of the Seven Gables

Time had been harsh to the House of the Seven Gables, yet it clung onto its echoed existence with a grim determination. Its walls stood tall, etched with the desolation of ages. As the last descendant of the Pyncheon family, Arthur was now its sole inhabitant. The house seemed to breathe around him, the wood creaking and groaning with the weight of secrets and sins committed within their walls. Arthur's late-night explorations often led him to believe something else was there with him; a lingering presence, the remnants of the Pyncheon curse? He wasn't sure.

One windy autumn night, Arthur was drawn to the sixth gable. Here, he found an old, worn-out book under a loosened floorboard. A chill ran down his spine as the icy touch of the book rolled over his fingers. Its pages were brittle, yellowed with time, authored by an unknown Pyncheon ancestor. As Arthur read, he discovered it to be an account of hidden wealth and cryptic instructions leading to it.

Over the following weeks, Arthur absorbed himself in the ancestor's story, tracing the clues left behind. He found himself standing before the seventh gable, the only part of the house that he’d never ventured into; the door was always locked and no key was found after his father's death. Yet, as he stood there with the ancient book in his hand, he heard a faint click; and the door creaked open.

Inside, he found a room untouched by time, dust floating in the single ray of light that streamed through a crack in the wooden facade. As he explored further, he discovered a hidden compartment in the wall. As the musty smell of age and dust rolled out, so did a golden locket, intricately made, with the Pyncheon crest on it. Arthur was speechless; had he found the lost Pyncheon fortune?

Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through the room, extinguishing his candle. He heard a soft whisper, 'Vengeance has been served,' fading away. Arthur turned around, but he was alone. His heart raced, but he knew what he had to do. He placed the locket back in the hidden compartment and sealed it.

That night, Arthur let go of his family's past and its grip over the House of the Seven Gables. When dawn broke, the house appeared different; lighter. Arthur knew then that the Pyncheon curse was lifted. The house was no longer a symbol of past sins, but a testament to the lone Pyncheon who chose wisdom over greed and forsaking his ancestor’s sins, found his redemption.
