The Last Game

Inspired by John Grisham's novel: Bleachers

Cameron Colt was no stranger to Messina, a town known for its Friday night football games and legendary coach, Rake. Having grown up in the shadows of the stadium bleachers, Cameron was now back, not as a spectator but as a player for Messina High School football team.

The news of Coach Rake’s failing health had reached Cameron, and he couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness. Years ago, when he was still a skinny kid dreaming of making big plays, Coach Rake was the one who had seen potential in him and shaped him into a formidable player.

Messina was preparing for the all-important championship match against their fierce rivals, when Cameron received the news of Coach Rake’s passing. It was a cruel irony that the man who had devoted his life to the team couldn't witness their most important game.

The game was to be played in the presence of packed bleachers, filled with cheering spectators, but for Cameron it felt as though the town had fallen silent, mourning the loss of their beloved coach. Stepping onto the field that day, Cameron felt a surge of emotions. He looked at the empty spot where Coach Rake used to sit, his heart feeling heavier with each passing second.

However, Coach Rake's teachings came back to him. Success was not merely about winning, but how you played the game. He knew that remembering Rake meant embodying his teachings and bringing them to life on the field. Shaking off his grief, Cameron walked into the match with newfound determination.

The game was as intense as it could get. Every tackle and every pass felt like a tribute to Coach Rake. With each touchdown, Cameron could almost hear Rake's booming voice echoing around the stadium, rejoicing with them. Perhaps, the team had never played so passionately before.

No one could quite remember the last time Messina had played such a thrilling match. The victory was sweet but the tears that ran down their cheeks were a concrete reminder of their loss. That night, under the beaming stadium lights and roaring crowd, Messina had won not just a game, but a battle of emotions and loss.

As Cameron glanced around the field, his gaze landed on the empty spot where Coach Rake used to sit. He knew that the seat would forever remain empty, but the lessons that the tough yet caring man had imparted would forever resonate on the field. To Cameron and his teammates, Rake would always be more than a coach, he would forever be the heart and soul of Messina Football.
