The Swan's Serenity
Inspired by Betsy Cromer Byars's novel: The Summer of the Swans
Sara Godfrey had always found herself lost in the beauty of the swans that visited the lake near her house every summer. This summer was no different except for the fact that her brother, Charlie, who was usually her companion, was missing.
One calm morning, Sara was walking though the quiet woods, lost in her thoughts about Charlie, when she spotted a familiar sight - a family of swans gliding peacefully across the lake. The sereneness calmed her frantic heart a little and she sat down on the usual wooden bench to watch them.
As she sat there, pondering over her missing brother, a baby swan separated from the family and started drifting closer to the shore. The baby swan seemed as lost as she felt. It was stuck in some reeds near the bank, trying to paddle its way out, but to no avail. Instinctively, Sara rushed to help, wading into the water and carefully disentangling the young bird.
Suddenly, she noticed something out of place near the edge of the forest. She squinted at the sight and her heart leapt with joy as she recognized the bright red jacket that Charlie wore everywhere. He was standing there, still as a statue, watching the spectacle. She started waving furiously and Charlie timidly waved back.
In that moment, she felt a sense of relief flooding her being. All the constant worry and fear about Charlie’s disappearance was finally replaced with a feeling of immense joy. Sara ran out of the water, clutching the baby swan in her arms, and towards Charlie. As they hugged, she felt her worries melting away. They were replaced with the sense of hope and happiness that the summer of the swans had always brought them.
After their emotional reunion, Sara carefully placed the baby swan back on the water. It quickly paddled away to join its family, creating ripples across the calm lake. Its journey was an analogy for their own experiences that summer. They had been lost, they had faced challenges, but they had also found their way back to each other, just like the baby swan had found its way back home.
In the end, Sara realized that the summer of the swans wasn't just about the beautiful birds visiting the lake near their house. It was about finding their way through the tough times, about hope and resilience, about sticking together as a family. It was a summer of love, of fears conquered, and of lessons learnt. It was a summer they would always remember.
