The Wimpy Kid's Dance: A Reversal of Fate
Inspired by Jeff Kinney's novel: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw
It was finally the day of the Valentine's Day dance at Greg Heffley's middle school. Greg, the quintessential wimpy kid, was both nervous and excited. He had, after all, managed to invite Holly Hills, the prettiest girl in school. Now, everything was up to fate.
Being a typical teenager filled with self-doubt, Greg was sure Holly was going to ditch him as coming to the dance with him was nothing short of a social suicide for her. Yet, as he entered the school gymnasium, nervously scanning the crowd, he saw a familiar face. It was Holly, waiting for him, with a smile.
Throughout the evening, Greg did what every wimpy kid would do. His attempts at dancing looked more like a flailing octopus than John Travolta. His jokes were met with forced laughs. He spilled punch on his shirt. He wondered how much more of this Holly could tolerate.
Just when he was about to give up and leave, Holly pulled him aside and whispered, 'You know, you're not like the other boys. You're real. That's why I agreed to come with you.' That was the last thing Greg expected to hear. His heart raced. He felt a newfound confidence. Maybe, his wimpiness wasn't a negative thing after all. Maybe, it made him more human, more approachable, more...likeable.
The night ended with Holly giving Greg a peck on the cheek; something Greg would remember forever. He walked home, replaying that moment in his head over and over. He realized then, that his Dad was right. The world loved a good underdog story. Or in his case, a wimpy kid story.
