In the little town of Villette, there stood a quaint boarding school, overseen by the stern yet peculiar Madame Beck. Amongst the many inhabitants of the school was a demure, almost invisible Englishwoman, Lucy Snowe. It was Lucy who entered this foreign land one dreary day, harboring secrets and harboring sorrows unknown to the world. She was running not towards something but from something, a past that was not to be revealed to the prying eyes of the world, a past that was hers and hers alone to bear witness.
