A Friend Not Forgotten

Inspired by Fred Gipson's novel: Old Yeller

The wind rustled through the tall trees, whisking a symphony of whispers across the landscape. The sun slowly set, casting long shadows across the mossy ground. Nestled in this tranquil setting, Travis Coates was squatting by the side of a fresh grave, his heart heavy with sorrow. He had just buried Old Yeller, the dog that had saved his life. The dog that had become a part of his family.

Old Yeller wasn’t always his. The dog just showed up one day, dirty, scruffy, and starving. Yet he had been a blessing in disguise, bringing joy and laughter into their home. Regardless of his origins, Old Yeller had a unique way of fitting perfectly into their life.

He remembered the day Yeller had saved Arliss from the mother bear. Yeller had fought that bear with all his might, not caring about his own wellbeing, just to keep the family safe. That was the day Yeller had earned their respect.

Yeller had been more than just a dog to Travis; he had been a companion and a friend. They had shared countless adventures together, hunting in the woods, guarding the farm, and looking after little Arliss. The bond between them had grown stronger each day, interwoven with strands of love, respect, and trust.

But then, Yeller was attacked by a rabid wolf. Travis could still hear the eerie howl of the wolf echoing in his ears, the fear surging through him at the thought that same madness gnawing at his friend. Faced with a gut-wrenching decision, Travis had ended Yeller’s suffering himself. It was the hardest thing he had ever done.

Now, as he traced the engraved name on the wooden cross, Time seemed frozen around him. His heart ached at the loss, yet he knew he had been lucky to know Old Yeller. Lucky to have learned the true meaning of friendship, bravery, and sacrifice from a scruffy, yellow dog that had wandered into their lives one fine day.

As darkness enveloped the farm, a small whimper broke through the silence. Travis turned around to see a tiny, yellow pup staring at him with familiar soft eyes. A tiny ray of hope sparked in Travis's heart as he extended his hand to the pup, the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

There would never be another Old Yeller. But this little pup carried within him the spirit of his father, a legacy of bravery, loyalty, and love. As Travis looked down at the little pup who was now willfully nibbling at his fingers, he knew that while Yeller's chapter had ended, his story would live on.
