Ramona Quimby: The Family Historian

Inspired by Beverly Cleary's novel: Ramona Quimby, Age 8

It was the middle of autumn and Ramona Quimby, age 8, was feeling restless. She was used to her usual adventures, but these days, school and homework took most of her time. She missed the moments of spontaneity and freedom. One day, while rummaging through the attic, she stumbled upon an old photo album. It contained pictures of her parents, Aunt Bea, and of her when she was just a toddler. An idea sparked in her mind. She decided to make her family history project for school.

She spent days researching, going through old letters, pictures, and asking her parents and Aunt Bea about their childhood. Ramona was fascinated by the stories and realized that every family member had been an adventurer in their own way. Her father, taking up jobs across states, her mother, going to college and protesting for women's rights, Aunt Bea who had once run a marathon and their family pet Picky Picky, a stray adopted by her parents who had travelled miles to reach their backyard.

With each story, her project kept growing, taking the shape of a large scrapbook. At school, she had trouble keeping it in her bag. Even carrying it seemed difficult due to its size. But Ramona was proud of her work. It was her family's story.

On the presentation day, Ramona was nervous. Her project was different from her classmates. There were no famous ancestors, no exciting tales of valor, only everyday people living their lives. The time came for her to present. With all the confidence she could muster, she unfolded the stories.

She spoke about her mom's determination, her dad's adventurous spirit, Aunt Bea's resilience and even about Picky Picky's journey. As she finished, the room was silent, and for a moment, a worried Ramona thought she had bored everyone.

However, to her surprise, her classmates started clapping, followed by her teacher. She had not only captivated everyone's attention but also made them reflect on the importance of ordinary lives and stories. Ramona was happy, her project was a success. Not just because it was appreciated by others, but because she was proud of it. It was a tribute to her family and their extraordinary, ordinary adventures. Indeed, Ramona Quimby, age 8, was not just an adventurer but now also a family historian.
