Ramona's Unforeseen Picnic Adventure

Inspired by Beverly Cleary's novel: Ramona the Pest

As the summer sun painted the town of Klickitat Street golden, Ramona Quimby, a lively, scrappy second grader was planning her biggest picnic yet. Ramona's adventurous spirit was already well known in their neighborhood, her antics earning her the title 'Ramona the Pest.' This time, she was excited to prove that she could organize a fun, memorable event without any pest-like behaviour. Wearing her most favorite overalls and wide brimmed hat, she set off to the park, her picnic basket swinging in her small, determined hands.

As she walked, she practiced 'being nice,' rehearsing polite sentences in her mind and resolving not to yank anyone's curls, especially not Howie's. Things started off well. Even when Beezus, her older sister, accidentally spilled orange juice on her sandwich, Ramona didn't overreact. Instead, she shared her apple with Beezus and they both laughed, their giggles echoing around the park. She was indeed, not being a pest.

Suddenly, a squirrel dashed from a nearby tree and snatched a sandwich from the basket. Ramona was horrified and for a moment, she thought about giving the squirrel a good chase. After all, she reasoned, squirrels should know better than to steal people's sandwiches. But remembering her pledge, she resisted the urge. Instead, she decided to share her picnic with the squirrels. Sure enough, word spread quickly in the squirrel community, and soon the picnic was a feast for both humans and squirrels.

As the day came to a close, everyone clapped for Ramona, applauding her for the wonderful picnic and the unexpected guests. Her mother kissed her forehead, and even Beezus couldn't help but hug her grinning, pest-free sister. 'Well done, Ramona,' she whispered, her voice full of pride. As they packed up and started the walk home, Ramona felt a warm glow inside her. Even without the pest-like behavior, she could still have fun, and more importantly, make everyone around her happy. From that day on, Ramona decided she would continue being a pest, but only in the most delightful ways possible.
