The Unseen Heroes
Inspired by Lois Lowry's novel: Number the Stars
The cold wind whispered through the narrow streets of Copenhagen, filled with an eerie silence. The unending struggle against the Nazis had left its imprints everywhere in the form of deserted houses and fear-soaked eyes. Amidst this chaos, lived the Johansen family. Their daughter, Annemarie Johansen, had her life spun around when her close friend, Ellen Rosen, a Jewish girl, had to be hidden in their house to escape the Nazis. The story, 'The Unseen Heroes', is a tribute to those unsung heroes of the war.
One evening, the Johansens had an unexpected visit from the Nazi soldiers. Everyone's heart trembled as they examined each corner of their humble home. They questioned Mr. Johansen about the Rosens' whereabouts. With a poker face, he managed to convince them that Ellen was his niece Lise, who had died years ago.
The days passed slowly with a blend of fear and hope. The Johansens, despite the looming dread, took careful steps to ensure Ellen's safety. Clearing their home of any Jewish remnants and teaching Ellen to blend in as a member of their family, they risked their lives for a friend's safety.
One day, the Johansens received news about a planned Nazi raid on Jews. They decided to take the girls to Uncle Henrik's house near the sea. The journey was treacherous, with Nazis at every corner. However, the quick wit of the Johansens and their well-planned route saved them from any untoward encounters.
At Uncle Henrik's, the girls were told a fairy tale about the King who would save the Jews. The gravity of the situation finally dawned on Annemarie when she understood the hidden meaning. The fairy tale was indeed their reality, and Uncle Henrik was part of the Resistance, helping Jews escape.
The night before their departure, Annemarie was given a mission. She had to deliver a package to Uncle Henrik's boat without being caught. She ran through the woods with her heart pounding, clutching the package tightly. She succeeded and took a breath of relief when Uncle Henrik thanked her with teary eyes.
The next morning, the girls bade each other a tearful goodbye as the boat sailed away towards Sweden. Annemarie watched her best friend disappear into the horizon, her heart heavy yet hopeful.
In these times of dread and despair, the Johansens showed exceptional courage and selflessness. They were the unseen heroes, who in their own humble ways, fought against the atrocities of war, prioritizing humanity over anything else.
